Are These Homeowners Ignorant Or Arrogant Or Probably Both

Laguna Beach: Variance NOTThe homeowners, they withheld their name, sent a notice around to their extended neighborhood asking for support in the getting the city to grant them a variance for the illegally built structure to house the trash cans.

I don't get it. If you can afford to buy any house in Laguna it usually means you have some subset of brains. Yet at 1425 Mar Vista Way the owners didn't bother getting permits for the structure. Now they want the city to forgive them and let them keep said structure.

So are the homeowners stupid? Are they arrogant? I think they're both - Stupid and arrogant.

Also remember we have no idea how many code violations are in this structure.

Is this structure safe? Since they didn't bother getting permits there is no telling.

The Design Review Board will hear their appeal on October 24, 2013 at 6 PM. Variance 13-1731.

If you have an opinion on variances then contact Martina Spear, Associate Planner, at mspeare@lagunabeactcity.net.

Now here's the kicker. Even if the Design Review Board refuses to grant them a variance the owners will take their appeal to the City Council and odds are in favor the Council WILL grant them a variance.

Arrogant: characterized by or proceeding from arrogance, or a sense of superiority, self-importance, or entitlement: arrogant claims.

Ignorant: lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned: an ignorant man.
1425 MAR VISTA WAY, APN 644-151-03 (Staff Assist) VARIANCE 13-1731, DESIGN REVIEW 13-1732, REVOCABLE ENCROACHMENT PERMIT 13-1733 AND A CATEGORICAL EXEMPTION The applicant requests Board of Adjustment/Design Review Board approval to construct a trash enclosure. Design review is required for modifications to a prior approval. A variance is required to exceed the maximum fence height in the front yard [25.50.012 (B)(1)], to encroach into the corner cutback area [25.50.006(A)]. A revocable encroachment permit is requested for construction within the public right-of-way. (Code enforcement)

I recommend you read the staff report. It makes for really interesting reading. Here is the link to the staff report.

    1. I believe the city gave it's blessing.

I've been busy with a bathroom remodel and just haven't followed up on this one. Will go down to City Hall Monday and find out what went down.
