Downtown Retailers Against Competition.
Local home design stores hate competition. They don't understand to laws of the market. Plus most of these home design stores character and appeal is based on the owner. In other words they're all unique.
Do we have to many art galleries? Too many dentists? Too many real-estate agents? Too many lawyers? Well maybe lawyers.
Let the market decide what's good and bad. Who closes and who prospers.
For sure the Tuvaul is not the decider for the public. Tuvual should mind it's business.
Here's the story in the OC Register.

Why Latitude 33 Bookshop Is Closing
This message arrived today from Tom Ahern of Latitude 33 Bookshop:
For most of the years since I opened Latitude 33 Bookshop in January of 1996, running it has been a rewarding experience. People told us that they loved our store, our selection, our staff.
The last two years, however, have been difficult for us. Sales declined significantly, from a combination of the recession across the country; an even deeper local recession in Laguna Beach due to declines in tourism and art gallery sales (gallery owners and staff, as well as artists, have traditionally bought lots of books, especially art books); and competition from Amazon.com, with its strategy of predatory pricing and selling the Kindle and ebooks below cost to gain market share. Despite cutting costs to the absolute minimum, I have had to put in over $100,000 during the past two years to keep the doors open. The lease was expiring, and I would have to lock myself in to run the store for several more years to stay in the space.
At the same time, more and more I felt the need to retire for personal reasons.
I tried hard to find a buyer for the store, to keep a good bookstore in Laguna. Several newspapers ran articles on the search for a buyer, and I placed an ad in the classified section of Bookselling This Week, the enewsletter of the American Booksellers Association. Nineteen parties expressed interest, but none came through with an offer.
It is extremely painful for me, but I have concluded that the only choice is to close Latitude 33 Bookshop before the end of August.
Starting immediately, all books and other items in stock will be sold at a 20% discount. The stock is not tired books we cannot return, but the latest books, plus a great selection of backlist books. (Frontlist is books published recently for the first time, and backlist is books that have been in print for more than six months, such as To Kill A Mockingbird or The Cat in the Hat). We will honor our Booklovers Bucks $10 coupons, but will not be issuing any more. We will order books we do not have in stock and out-of-print books, though the discount will not apply. In addition, the custom solid wood bookshelves are for sale, as well as the chairs and tables (they can be picked up when the store finally closes).
We hope that you will come back in and take advantage of the sale. We'd love to sell our entire stock sooner than the end of August. We will both win.
Thanks for supporting Latitude 33 over the years.

Heisler Park Improvements Looking Good
Improvements to Heisler Park are nearing completion. The open air stage at Rockpile Park is the last to be completed. Could be by the end of the month, that is before July 4th, the entire park will be open. I've missed Memorial Point.
As they say: "Open, Open, Open."
