Ken Frank, Laguna Beach City Manager, To Retire In November

Laguna Beach: Boardwalk DestructionNow this should be interesting. Will they promote his second or will the city do the smart thing and do a thorough search? After all isn't it a buyers market in this economy? Here's the announcement in the OC Register.

The Homeless Solution

Laguna Beach: Family Time At The BeachThe homeless will now have their own year round place to stay. The Verizon lot will be the new homeless shelter location. That's about as far out of downtown as you can get and still be in Laguna. Here's the story in Coastline.

City Council To Hear Long Range Sewer Improvement Plan!

Laguna Beach: Wet MorningThe city just may get a long-range plan to improve our sewer system. Remember we had one of the largest sewer spills ever in Orange County last year. That cannot happen again.

Here's a summary of the plan to be presented to the City Council tonight:

Initiate the steps to undertake about $24 million in capital improvements to the sewer system over the next two decades and seek solutions for funding the improvements by directing the City Manager to 1) prepare for a 3.5% sewer fee increase in three consecutive fiscal years 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2) return to the Council with an optional capital improvement program which reallocates $675,000 per year to the sewer system.

Just Give Me A Nice Day. No Moving Around!

Laguna Beach: Montage MonolithFrom the OC Register on yesterday's quake:

There also has been a vigorous series of aftershocks in and around Mexicali, including a 4.3 shaker at 9:40 p.m. and a 4.4 at 9:10 p.m. This is the biggest regional seismic event since the 7.3 Landers earthquake hit Southern California in June 1992 — an event that triggered a 6.5 quake at Big Bear hours later and led to lots of research on so-called “sympathetic quakes.”

It's Not Rockpile Beach But It Is A Tide Pool

Here are some more photos of the tidepools below Heisler Point that the LA Times said was missing sand. Well yea, daa! It's technically a tidepool.

All they had to do was look 100 yeads south and seen more sand at Main Beach than you will ever see along the entire Malibu coastline. Tough luck Malibu.

Where Are The Rocks You Promised Me?

The LA Times printed a story about all the missing sand at various beaches along the south Orange County coast. They were especially excited about the missing sand at Treasure Island beach. So I went down there this morning and saw nothing but SAND. Where are the rocks? Anyway I did get a few nice photos of the morning Sun and the beaches below the Montage Hotel.

Just look at all that sand. Thanks LA Times. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't have gone down to the Montage and gotten these great photos.

Again thanks.

Is This Legal?

Laguna Beach: Wood StepsThe Montage Hotel, Laguna Beach, installed a wooden stairway so that their guests could get to the beach.

There are two problems with the wooden stairs: Is it legal? And it doesn't accomplish what it was designed and installed to do.

LA Times Finds Rocks At Rockpile Beach????

Here's the story in the LA Times that documents the lose of sand at Rockpile Beach. Only problem with the photos that were included in the story is that they're NOT Rockpile Beach.

The story is about the lose of sand at local beaches. This is normal this time of year. If they had asked anyone who goes to the beach they could have told them. Instead they get a quote for our great city manager, Ken Franks, who probably has NEVER seen Rockpile Beach.

First Rockpile Beach is full of rocks. That's why it's called Rockpile. None of the photos in the LA Times article show the REAL Rockpile Beach.

Second the photos show the surf break built by man and located on the south side of Heisler Point. The man-made break was built for a reason. To protect the cliff from high tide storm surf.

Third some of our beaches did lose sand last week but just as fast the sand has been coming right back to the beaches.

So for clarity I've included photos of: The real Rockpile Beach, the man-made break at Heisler Point getting pounded by storm surf in January, and lastly the steps shown in the Times article are not at Rockpile but at the south end of Heisler Park going down to the beach. Main Beach is just to the left of the steps.

All the photos were taken last January and after that storm we had MORE sand than ever on our beaches.

16 Businesses In Laguna Sold This Year. How Many Couldn't Be Sold?

Laguna Beach: Run for your life. The OC Register has a story today that details the number of businesses that have sold this year. They asked the wrong question. What would be more interesting would be the number of businesses that couldn't be sold and they just shut the doors and walked away.

Big number maybe?

City Wants To Purchase Hotel

Laguna Beach: City Buys HotelI don’t normally get inside information about what the city is up too but during an informal conversation with a long-time employee of the City of Laguna Beach I learned that the city might be on the verge of buying the ‘Inn at Laguna Beach.’ This is not as far-fetched as it sounds. Through some help of professional investors we have learned that the parent company of the Inn, located in Arizona, is going through some tough times and the Inn, which is out of their comfort zone in location and business, is becoming a liability to the company.

Can the City of Laguna Beach afford to by the Inn? Does the city have the money? We don’t know. They do have unused land they can sell. But money for the purchase is the big unknown.

But the purchase of the Inn would solve more than a few problems for the city. No longer would it have to build a new Lifeguard Headquarters. The lifeguards would move into the Inn. The city would no longer have to build a center for the homeless. The Inn would take them.

The Inn could also generate income. They can contract out the top-floor restaurant. Fill in the pool and use the rooms at the pool level for beach concessioners. I’m sure there are other ways the Inn can be used to generate income for the city. The city wouldn’t operate these commerial ventures but contract them out to local businesses. A win win for all.

I’m sure our local news organizations can get to the center of this story better and faster then Laguna Beat. After all they have the press-pass not us. So don’t bug me on the details but go to the Independent. They should have the answers.

Wait, wait there’s more: April Fools!
