Kelp Finally Being Cleaned Up

Laguna Beach: the StrandLaguna Beat reported on the large amount of kelp on our beaches last week. It was finally cleaned off the beach this week. I'm glad I didn't spend my weekend at the beach. Memorial weekend must have been kelpful.

Here's the story in the OC Register.

Tides:
04:01 AM 3.15 feet High Tide
05:41 AM Sunrise
10:20 AM 1.25 feet Low Tide
05:22 PM 4.35 feet High Tide
07:58 PM Sunset
12:13 AM 1.72 feet Low Tide (Sun)

Kelp is part of what we term "BIOMASS" and it is an integral degradable element in coastal/marine ecologies.....It might appear unsightly, yes it draws flies, but it is strictly regulated and monitored like seashells, etc., by the State and can only be removed if it represents a hazard or some type of safety issue. The Cal Coastal Commission specifically requests that NGOs like CLEAN WATER NOW COALITION leave it on the beach at our cleanups, let it break down naturally, be used by the biota as nesting materials and provide nutrients to microscopic life forms. The public may not like the smell or sight of it covering our strands, but high surf or sewage spills/urban runoff pollution contribute to greater amounts of kelp on the strands-----It's a minor inconvenience really. WE, human beings, are what's un-natural on a beach.
