Aliso Beach Parking? Not!
This photo was not taken at the Aliso Beach skimboard competition but in front of the Pacific Edge hotel two weeks ago. Why this picture and not the REAL thing? Parking! Yes even us locals have to park somewhere. With no bus service on Sunday the car was the only way to get there. Don't even suggest I walk. Did you? Even the underground parking below the Albertsons was full.

Hey, let's all go down to Aliso and skim in the toxic soup of urban runoff that drools out from the Creek mouth! Why is the World Championship held at a beach renowned for barfing out carcinogenic discharges? Just because it has the best sand & surf conditions doesn't justify immersing the competitors in this CACA. It looks great, but like The Portrait of Dorian Gray is grotesque inside when it comes to the poor water quality. By wallowing in it hence absorbing through their skin, by ingesting it, recreationalists get their dose of a wide gamut of pollutants and yet it remains popular. The contest makes the public feel safe in spite of the science that warns of the dangers. Actually, legally it's both a public and attractive nuisance that Victoria Skimboards exploits for $$$. Long ago (15 years) the owner of VS Tex Haines (who boasts of a BS in Biology from Stanford), a co-founders of the Surfrider Chapter in Laguna, railed about the health hazards of Aliso-----Now that it's his cash cow he extolls its virtues. His excuse? It's the only accessible spot around with a convenient, large parking lot. Don't you just LOVE capitalism? By the time anyone gets cancer it'll be too late to make the connection. So maybe surfers ARE stoooopid?
